Strength

Strength is defined as "the ability to exert a force against a resistance". The strength needed for a javelin thrower is different to the strength needed by a weight lifter which shows that there are different types of strength.

The classifications of strength are:

  • Maximum strength - the greatest force that is possible in a single maximum contraction. Maximum strength can be developed with weight training.
  • Elastic strength - the ability to overcome a resistance with a fast contraction. Elastic strength can be developed with conditioning, plyometric and weight training.
  • Strength endurance - the ability to express force many times over. Strength endurance can be developed with circuit training and free weight training.

A muscle will only strengthen when it is worked beyond its normal operation - it is overloaded. Overload can be progressed by increasing the:

  • number of repetitions of an exercise
  • number of sets of the exercise
  • intensity - reduced recover time

fitness.uk.net can work with you to increase your strength for sports or for general ability.

fitness.uk.net advises that strength trainers follow the WABBA workload in their training programmes:

  • Use 70-75% of your 1 rep maximum weight

  • Use 3 sets

  • 10 reps

  • Short rest periods of 1 1/2 mins
